Elizabeth joined the UpRising Leadership Programme in 2013, as a second year law student at the University of Birmingham. Libby knew she wanted to develop her skills and networks beyond her studies and it was through the programme that she met her future mentor, Andrew Litchfield. Libby has since completed her LPC MSc and has recently started a position as a first seat Trainee Solicitor in the corporate team at Gowling WLG’s Birmingham office.
A long-time supporter of UpRising, Andrew is a Partner at Gowling WLG and has a breadth of experience helping clients manage risk to meet regulatory requirements. Libby met Andrew after Gowling WLG hosted UpRising Birmingham’s ‘City Strategic Challenges’ session in 2013. She introduced herself and her ambition to pursue a career in law. At this point a mentoring relationship naturally emerged, with Andrew offering guidance with job applications and training contracts, then assessment days and interviews over the past four years.
After a number of placements and work experience with law firms across the midlands, Libby has recently started her role as a Trainee Solicitor at Gowling WLG and is enjoying her first seat in their corporate team.

UpRising provided me with a great opportunity to not only improve my leadership skills but to meet and network with a wide range of people in Birmingham across a wide variety of sectors. This helped me to recognise not only my own potential but also the power young people have to affect social change.
I had always wanted to become a solicitor, and having moved to Birmingham in 2013, it was the obvious place to begin my legal career. I was lucky enough to be mentored by somebody who had first-hand experience of the legal application process. Andrew’s guidance with my work experience and job applications was invaluable in helping me to secure a Training Contract.
