West Midlands teens need ‘real’ mentors to combat disengagement

The Careers & Enterprise Company, West Midlands Mayor Andy Street and One Million Mentors come together to support disengaged young people in the West Midlands.

Today on National Mentoring Day, The Careers & Enterprise Company are standing with the Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street and One Million Mentors to call on employers in the West Midlands to support local young people. Delta Financial Systems, a FinTech company and Microsoft partner will host an event in Birmingham today, where the three will come together to ask employers to step up and encourage their employees to mentor the future generation, particularly pre-GCSE teens at risk of disengaging.

Aspiring journalists enjoy invaluable ‘speed-mentoring’ with industry professionals at City Hall

At the first event of its type ever held, ‘One Million Mentors’ was launched as part of a pilot scheme to help young people across the capital into employment by giving them mentors in a variety of sectors.

The London Press Club teamed with UpRising to pilot the media event which was attended by 140 ‘mentees’ and professionals. As up-and-coming journalists they were given invaluable face-to-face or online mentorship time with experienced journalists.

We read a lot at the moment about the way that our society and way of life are changing more rapidly than at any time in the past. New patterns of social media are changing the ways that we keep in touch with each other. The virtual worlds of social contact are often replacing actual real time social contact which can lead to isolation for young and old.

The worlds of work, family life and personal relationships are also changing. For the first time since the Second World War, it is generally considered that twenty something’s may not have access to the jobs, home ownership and increased wealth that many in previous generations could aspire to and often attain.
