One Million Mentors celebrates National Mentoring Day 2020
On Tuesday 27th October One Million Mentors is celebrating National Mentoring Day, launched to recognise and celebrate the power of mentoring in the UK and around the world.
National Mentoring Day raises awareness of the invaluable and rewarding contribution that mentors make – on the lives of mentees, on our local communities, economy and on our society.
Mentoring has never been more important for young people. The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis means at least a million young people are at risk of unemployment.
1MM aims to level the playing field, especially for young people from disadvantaged communities who are more likely to face barriers to accessing further education or employment.
Since its pilot in 2017, 1MM has matched 2000+ young people with a mentor, who they meet for one hour, once a month, for twelve months. The programme has a transformational effect on the lives of young people. Before mentoring, for example, only 29% of young people felt confident securing the experience or training they needed to succeed; after mentoring, this rose to an impressive 70% (One Million Mentors, 2019).
Watch some of our inspirational young people talking about their mentoring experiences here.
Georgia, a recent languages graduate from Queen Mary University London, said this about her mentoring experience:
Particularly at the moment because of the Coronavirus pandemic there is a lot of uncertainty. [My mentor and I] have looked at ways I can really enhance my experience, and how I should sell my skills using my CV. From the first time I met Jean-Luc he was really enthusiastic, positive and encouraging. 1MM is such a great scheme, and I feel really lucky to be part of it.
Are you a young person aged 18-25 looking for your next step? Would you benefit from tailored, one-to-one support with your personal development or career goals?
